Sutherland Sydney Coffee Festival July 12 2009
Posted by deb on Saturday, June 27 @ 16:29:57 EST (40 reads)
Shire Coffee Festival – a lot of fun at little cost
When could you last buy a coffee for $2 a cup? Sutherland Shire Council’s coffee festival ‘Coffee @ Peace’ will be a great day out for the family at little cost on Sunday 12 July 2009 from 9am to 3pm.
The festival runs between 9am and 3pm and will include free kids art classes, a musical reptile show, and celebrity storytellers including Olympic swimmer Craig Stevens and marathon swimmer Susie Maroney.
Roving entertainers including a guitarist, cartoonist and magician will perform in coffee houses throughout Sutherland, while in Peace Park, there will be live music, market stalls and cooking demonstrations.
"This is going to be a great way to spend a winter’s day – rugged up with a warm cup of coffee in the park with live music and entertainment," said Sutherland Shire Mayor Lorraine Kelly. "It will be a great low cost family day out."
One of the highlights of the festival will be the Walkabout Reptiles musical reptile show – children will have the chance to get up close with some of our native snakes and lizards.
Sutherland Entertainment Centre executive chef Graham Krueger will cook up a storm and create some gourmet treats that are perfect accompaniments for coffee. Throughout the day he will show how to poach eggs perfectly, how to bake traditional ‘soda water’ scones, how to create a delicious lamb salad and how to set up a high tea.
In the Chuo City Gardens, adjacent to Peace Park, witness a traditional Japanese Tea ceremony conducted with official guests. They will show the Japanese custom known as Chado – or ‘the Way of Tea’.
Festival goers will have the chance to see a Turkish Coffee ceremony showcasing the custom of the serving of coffee by a bride-to-be for her future husband. The twist for this ceremony is that if the bride is unhappy with her choice of groom she can put either salt or chilli in the coffee instead of sugar and the groom must drink it – otherwise it’s considered an insult to the bride’s family.
The Peter Morgan Band will play at Peace Park throughout the day, and the comedy act ‘Pull Your Head In’ will have festival goers in stitches.
Children will have the chance to unleash their creative talents and take part in art classes by Sandra Passerman. For shoppers, there will be market stalls with jewellery, art, photography, ceramics, scrapbooking, food, handbags and more.
Readers can duck into the Lifeline Bookfair at the Sutherland Entertainment Centre and pick up some books with all proceeds from sales going to help people in crisis through the Lifeline service.

Sorry, tokay is no longer okay
Sherry and tokay drinkers may soon have trouble finding their favourite drop after name changes forced by European wine producers. Australian sherry will soon be sold as ``apera'' and tokay will be marketed as ``topaque''. The old names, which have their roots in regional names, will be axed under a treaty with the European Union.
